HPC Systems AdministratorJan 2024 – Present
Research Computing, Research Technology Office, Arizona State University — Tempe, AZ
- Benchmark ASU supercomputers for the TOP500 and other lists with HPL, HPCG, and HPL-MxP.
- Created a ReFrame test suite for post-maintenance validation, which performs node-level and MPI checks across clusters, supporting rapid troubleshooting before returning systems to production.
- Port bioinformatics software, protein foundation models, and other scientific applications to Intel Gaudi2 accelerators and benchmark their performance.
- Tune workflow management systems for shared Slurm clusters; created WfTune, an open-source toolkit for reproducible comparisons of workflow performance and scheduler demand, supporting Nextflow and Snakemake.
- Refactor genomic pipelines for the Earth BioGenome and Vertebrate Genomes projects, including the nf-core-style Nextflow DSL2 rewrite of the Hiller Lab’s make_lastz_chains, merged upstream in May 2026 (third-largest contributor by commits).
- Created the wms-hpc-refactor agent skill, encoding the ten practices from the US-RSE’26 paper for AI-assisted workflow refactoring.
- Develop a large-scale Nextflow virus detection and discovery pipeline with the NASA OSDR Microbiome Analysis Working Group.
- Facilitate a CIREN project with Michael Lynch that simulates how early RNA-like organisms evolve under mutation, natural selection, and genetic drift. The work translates the original C++ research code into Python, accelerates large-population simulations with PyTorch on GPUs, and validates results against the original models.
- Maintain scientific software stacks and bioinformatics databases for genomics research across ASU; troubleshoot job, software, and hardware issues in real time.
- Integrate HPC account management with the university registration database for automated account provisioning, and customize the Open OnDemand portal to support scientific applications and agentic AI functionality.
Graduate Research AssistantJan 2022 – Dec 2023
Efrem Lim Lab, ASU Biodesign Institute — Tempe, AZ
- Served on the Arizona Department of Health Services COVID-19 Sequencing Project team; built an ETL pipeline managing sequencing data for over one-third of Arizona’s COVID-19 patient population at the time and reporting results to government agencies and hospitals.
- Built a generalizable genomic workflow that identified two novel bat coronaviruses from 250 raw samples on ASU HPC.
- Developed an explainable neural network pipeline for microbiome-based classification of COVID-19 patient samples (400 features), using a multilayer perceptron (mean AUC 0.75) with SHAP for feature importance.
- Designed a DBSCAN-based clustering workflow to establish the true-positive threshold for KrakenUniq classification output.
- Contributed to an open-source Python package for model-agnostic feature reduction methods.
Research AssistantJun 2021 – Jan 2022
School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment, ASU — Tempe, AZ
- Built IoT enclosures for mobile weather stations, wiring twelve analog and digital sensors to Arduino Uno and Raspberry Pi.
- Built a real-time Adafruit data dashboard integrating MQTT, Google Drive, and SQLite for data logging and visualization.
Research AssistantSep 2020 – Jun 2021
School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, ASU — Tempe, AZ
- Designed an undergraduate machine learning curriculum (MAT 400-level) that has been taught at ASU since Fall 2021.
- Modeled COVID-19 transmission patterns by applying spectral clustering to 50,000 rows of U.S. population mobility data.
Software Development and Testing InternMay 2020 – Aug 2020
Autowise.ai & Boschung — Chandler, AZ & Chicago, IL
- Designed and executed software and hardware tests for a self-driving robotic street sweeper, resolving issues found in virtual and real-world road trials, and reported findings and recommendations to the R&D and Business teams.
- Led relocation of the full test set from Chandler to Chicago, including establishing a new test environment, producing new LiDAR maps, and training personnel for ongoing operations.
